Every gallon of gas burned in an automobile produces 22 lbs of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Every molecule emitted into the atmosphere has an average lifetime of 100 years. Americans make up less than 5% of the world’s population, yet they emit 25% of the carbon dioxide. Fifty years ago, the earth's human population was half of today's six billion. Half the world's forests are now gone, and well over 30 million acres more are lost each year. In the U.S., more than half our national forests have been logged, mined or otherwise industrialized.
