Agency allows Rock Creek mine to proceed

Conservation groups challenge approval of the Rock Creek Mine.
Ten conservation groups, including Rock Creek Alliance filedsuit challenged the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s approvalof the Rock Creek Mine. The lawsuit alleges the Fish and Wildlife Service violated the Endangered Species Act by issuing a biological opinion approving the mine even though it would severely harm protected bull trout and grizzly bears in the area.
Mining Reform
Mining reform passes the House, will now proceed to the Senate. We are hopeful that the U.S. Senate will produce a bill comparable to the U.S. House version.
REFORMING THE 1872 MINING LAW
MSHA report
The Mine Safety Health Administration's recent report on the death of a miner at Revett's Troy mine concluded that Revett "failed to install and maintain adequate ground support to protect miners from ground fall hazards". The report went on to say that this lack of action by Revett "constitutes more than ordinary negligence and is an unwarrantable failure to comply with a mandatory standard". Since the tragic accident occurred on July 30, 2007, the Troy mine has been cited for an additional 85 infractions. MSHA Report
MSHA dissolves partnership with Revett's Troy mine
Federal regulators say their relationship with management at the Troy Mine has deteriorated in the months following a fatal accident there, forcing them to dissolve a partnership with the company after mine management ignored a number of safety recommendations. Missoulian news

Feeding frenzy over wilderness continues
The lack of resistance on behalf of the permitting agencies have motivated other mining interests to seek the ore body that lie beneath the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness. Revett minerals and Mines Management are competing to be the first to haul ore from beneath the wilderness. Missoulian news

Cline Coal mine
Montana justifiably opposes a Canadian coal mine that would impact Flathead River, Flathead Lake, bull trout and grizzly bears. Montana however supports the Rock Creek mine that would impact the Clark Fork River, Idaho's Lake Pend Oreille, the regions threatened bull trout and grizzly bear.
